silence in the mess

I said yes, dig, destroy,

emerged after time.

I will be back, Earth garden

a way to climb from darkness into this being

we are an essential impulse

persistence planted there

bodies of that humid Eve.

take the surface with sleep

home needs naming

muses to bring through the barrier of sense

where was spring and moon and dirt

distance found dreams kneeled, listening

taste again some sweat or heat

realm of yearning between time.

remember:

transforming is a sign

Ritual can be re-made

the need to pull ends

This is Laura Soto’s first solo exhibition with The Box, presenting works born of regenerative ecosystems, made between 2016 to 2024.

Working with layered paper, resin, oils, acrylics, plaster and detritus, the various wall shells, tomes, and freestanding subjects absorb pieces of each other lost in their respective techniques of creation. Her process begins from potentially self-destructive anxious habits that have been reformulated into rituals of remembrance and transformation, which she herself thinks of as alchemically transcendent.

Laura Soto’s home and studio is three thousand feet from the Eaton Fire burn zone. We are collectively grateful it was spared from the fires, however it is in a zone of concern for toxic debris. Many members of The Box family and community have been directly affected by the Eaton Fires, losing their homes and possessions.

This exhibition will be a moment of repose to respect our rituals of regeneration.
